Here I’m using a type of charcoal, totally new to me and this is my first time using them. They’re amazing but I haven’t quite become familiar with them yet.

For those in need of ideas, I’ll share one of my approaches to an easel here. The usual easels rarely serve all needs and for those exceptions I built this easel/studio table sturdy enough to trust handling anything small or large that I can throw at it, and then some.
I could’ve used smaller wood dimensions but cutting down a 2x4 is just more work, and my objective was an easel to save me time not a new hobby to take my time.
By the time these large paintings are joined as diptychs and triptychs, they’re are quite heavy. This meant my easel would require a counter weight when fully extended.
I went to the hardware store looking for anything heavy and more stable than simply a bag of sand on a string. I soon found a heavy block of cement, gave it some paint to contain any dust but as with anything new—you learn as you go.
As I came closer to finishing the easel, it became rather obvious that my choice of counterweight would’ve sufficed at half my chosen weight but hindsight and all that always happens too late.
Well, it’s now finished, has long since made it through several projects and the oversized cement is too heavy for me to bother changing it to something less, and it works.
But, I built it—not to be pretty but to be effectively functional and it is.
The next easel will be better.

When finished these objects appear all organic in shape yet the process doesn’t happen without lots of geometry, math and what I like to call abstract algebra.

I had to rename this triptych after finishing it, seeing the dynamics had taken a new direction. With the canvas stretched three-dimensionally, it would seem counterproductive to work against the dynamics of the canvas and I think I’ve found a way to balance between structure and chroma. I’m finally comfortable with the results and it’s been a long process.
