Vigil

“Vigil” Watercolor on Arches paper, 30 x 22 inches.

Morning vigil at Mount Baker, still covered in a blanket of mist.

While the massive mountainside is an overwhelming sight—one that no painting or description could ever fully capture—it most certainly demanded that I give it my best.

I’m particularly fascinated by the way treetops and ragged formations peek through the mist, hinting at what lies hidden beyond.

Describing the mist in watercolor was a most interesting task, one that could only be accomplished through a large-scale wash. Maintaining everything subtle and delicate, while still conveying the enormity of the mountainside filling your entire view, was a fine balance. I believe I managed to capture that balance in the end.

I quite like this piece and the feeling it brings, and I’m grateful to know that it has found a good home where it is appreciated.
